How To Break The Axle On Your Jeep

The NotARubicon broke an axle shaft going up a difficult obstacle on the Doran trail at Calico. We had to be pulled up the waterfall after snapping the axle. We attempted a trail repair since the group leader had a spare axle shaft but after pulling the shaft we found it was sheared clean too close to the differential. We put the axel back in and limped approximately 1 mile back down the difficult trail to the pavement. Because the Jeep only had 2-wheel drive (front wheels only) we had to winch ourself over every moderately difficult spot.
We were 83 miles from home. The tow would have cost over $800 – Thank goodness for the AAA free towing benefit!
New chromoly axle shafts will be installed to replace the stock shafts.
